Those 55 and older may have an option when looking for work. A program provided by the U.S. Department of Labor offers work-based training for low-income, unemployed Americans.
The program called the Senior Community Employment Program (SCSEP) is offered in many locations across the country. My last look found 509 SCSEP programs.
One of the aims of the program is to connect eligible adults to part-time opportunities within nonprofit organizations. According to U.S. Department of Labor’s Nationwide Participant Evaluation of SCSEP, participants surveyed for PY 2020, reported a better outlook on life while working (about 76%) and more than 90% reported the same or better physical health while working.
Eligibility for the program:
- 55 or older
- Unemployed
- Living on a family income of no more than 125% of the federal poverty level (your local SCSEP office can help if you are not sure)
To apply, you can go to your nearest SCSEP office to complete the application. Types of training can include teacher’s aide, computer technician, health care worker, childcare provider, customer service representative, and more.
