In 1777, the national flag was approved and adopted in America.

In 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York (disassembled) in over 200 crates. It was a collaborative effort between France and the United States.

  • 1893 – George W. Ferris debuts the first Ferris wheel. It was part of the Columbian Exposition.
  • 1910 – The idea of having Father’s Day began in Spokane, Washington.

History of Father’s Day

A day set aside for fathers was an idea that began in Spokane, Washington.

Sonora Dodd was listening to a sermon at church when she began to think about her parents. When her mother died, she relied on her father to raise her. She suddenly realized there wasn’t a day to celebrate fathers. So, she decided to submit a formal request and met with community organizations. Together, they set aside June 19, 1910, for the first Father’s Day. Over time, interest grew and in 1966, it was officially proclaimed as a national observance by President Lyndon Johnson. Then, in 1972 under President Richard Nixon, a measure was established to permanently recognize the day. Fathers are celebrated and honored on the third Sunday in June.

Amusement Parks

As previously mentioned, George W. Ferris debuted his Ferris Wheel in 1893 during the Columbian Exposition. It was believed to be a way to marvel attendees like the Eiffel Tower did in 1889. More than 130 years later, it remains an attraction. Today, you can find Ferris Wheels at piers, bays, and amusement parks.

Amusement parks can also be a great option for birthdays. There’s so much to do and if you like crowds it can be an entertaining way to celebrate your special day. Amusement parks are usually open in June, and some parks offer party packages that include free parking and a limited number of admission tickets, or discounted tickets. There are also indoor adventure parks that may include trampolines, wall climbing, among other fun activities. So, check your local listings.
