Grilling season is here and what a great way to enjoy the outdoors. While spending time with friends and family there are recommendations to consider to help you stay safe. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides important food safety tips.

Food Safety Tips

  • When grilling, keep meat chill until you are ready to grill. While transporting meat, store in an insulated cooler at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
  • Wash hands before and after handling raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
  • Wash work surfaces including utensils and the grill, before and after cooking.
  • Use a food thermometer to ensure meat is cooked thoroughly.  When using a smoker keep temperature between 225 – 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Throw out marinades and sauces that have touched raw meat juices.
  • Place cooked meat on a clean plate.
  • Divide leftovers into small portions and place in covered, shallow containers. Refrigerate or freeze within 2 hours of cooking – or within one hour if the weather outside is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additional Tips to Consider while Grilling

Fire safety is important as many unintended actions can cause a fire. According to the U.S Fire Administration, there are essential tips to keep in mind while grilling:

  • Use propane, charcoal and wood pellet barbecue grills outside.
  • Place your grill away from siding and deck railing, and away from overhanging branches.
  • Keep a 3-foot safe zone around your grill to help keep children and pets safe.
  • Open gas grills before lighting.
  • Keep an eye on your grill and do not walk away from it when it is lit.
  • Clean your grill after each use as grease can start a fire.
  • Place the coals from your grill in a metal can with a lid once they have cooled.
  • Do not store or use a grill on a porch or balcony.

As weather permits, grilling can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Food safety tips include chilling meat, washing hands, using a food thermometer, and storing leftovers properly. Fire safety precautions are also important. Considering these important recommendations can help keep you and your family safe while grilling.
