- 1787 – The U.S. Constitution was signed by delegates to the Constitutional Convention.
- 1789 – First Congress of the United States proposed 12 amendments to the Constitution. Ten of the 12 amendments were ratified, the first 10 amendments of the Constitution, or the U.S. Bill of Rights.
- 1814 – Francis Scott Key watched the Battle of Baltimore from a guarded vessel. The events sparked his words that would become the U.S. national anthem.
- 1825 – George Stephenson (considered the Father of Railways) constructed the first locomotive to transport passengers on a public railway.
- 1882 – Thomas Edison created a viable use for electricity when he serviced 59 New York homes.
- 1888 – George Eastman invented the first roll-film camera and registered “Kodak.”
- 1890 – Sequoia National Park was established and became the second U.S. national park.
- 1901 – Theodore Roosevelt delivered his “Speak softly, and carry a big stick” speech in Minnesota which would later define his diplomacy as U.S. President.
- 1908 – Orville Wright completed the first hour-long flight in an airplane.
- 1916 – Clarence Saunders introduced the first supermarket.
- 1926 – Ford Motor Company, under Henry Ford, announced the 40-hour, 5-day workweek.
- 1954 – Willie Mays makes “The Catch” during Game 1 of the World Series. May’s defensive play kept the game tied and the NY Giants went on to win 5-2 over the Cleveland Indians.
- 1960 – At the Rome Olympics, Wilma Rudolph becomes the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympics.
- 1972 – During the “Match of the Century,” Bobby Fischer won the World Chess Championship.
- 1998 – Larry Paige and Sergey Brin incorporate Google, Inc.

In September, celebrating birthdays can include a trip outdoors to view the changing color of leaves.
During the month, you can begin to see the transition of seasons as fall foliage, like tree leaves, begin their abscission. In the United States, an array of beautiful colors can be seen in various areas. For example, the state of Colorado expects leaves to change colors toward the middle of September. Peak season for places like northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan may occur toward the end of the month.
