Moments in History
In 1930, the first planetarium opened in the United States (Adler Planetarium Chicago).
- 1962 – America’s second orbital spaceflight was completed by astronaut M. Scott Carpenter who completed three orbits of the Earth, including taking photographs of the planet.
In 1966, the first soft landing on the Moon was made by the United States (Surveyor 1 spacecraft).
- 1990 – The release of the first light image from Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field/Planetary camera.
History of Mother’s Day
In the early 1900s, Anna Jarvis wanted to celebrate motherhood. She desired to commemorate the life of her own mother who had recently died but also honor mothers across the country. So, she worked with retail stores to organize Mother’s Day events. She also wrote letters to newspapers and politicians. By 1914, the second Sunday in May became what we know as Mother’s Day. It was officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson.

As previously mentioned, the first American planetarium, opened in Chicago in 1930. Today there are many across the country, and they can be a nice option for birthdays.
See a sky show, learn about the solar system and universe. You can even have a birthday party at some of these centers. Some planetariums will include a host, access to exhibits, preferred seating for the show, and a party room.
